This is without a doubt the most complex model I have ever created. Nearly 7k polygons and a whole lotta weird geometry that required me to figure out a lot of creative workarounds. And I think the result is pretty darn awesome. I don’t think it's wrong of me to say that this is one of the best Discord models currently out there.

I am giving away a roughly 8-inch tall 3D-printed figure of this model in a unique and dynamic pose that is yet to be decided. WANT TO OWN IT? Keep reading.

I’m currently rigging him. Then we’ll be printing him. And painting him. And then giving him away in a random drawing.

Why are we doing this? Because we’ve been printing ponies for a few months now, and made vast improvements to our process to the point where we feel like we can easily be the best in this field. Well…what am I saying, we already are the best when it comes to printing ponies. No one else has their own printer and their own models and no one else has done this as intensely as we have. But since we started out just like everyone else—inexperienced—our first few months were a bit slow, and as a result, have dragged us down with backlog despite our improvements.

We wanted a boost to jump out of that hole. The answer was convention vending.

We want the chance to sell our 3D prints at a convention! That would give us the money to get more machines to make these toys faster and completely eliminate backlog so you guys won’t have to wait as long for your orders! I’m not joking, almost every decision I make with regards to improvement is how we can better serve our commissioners, because they’re the ones paying us, and they deserve the best.

I’ve already reserved a table at Unicon in Las Vegas using my saved funds from the Nightmare Moon Raffle. Now we just need the funds to make the trip there. Because you see, it’s not just about selling our stuff there so that we can improve order quality and turnaround time. Well, that's mainly it, but we also have an extra goal there as well.

We want to print a second copy of Discord so we can give one to John DeLancie, the voice behind the chaos.

Which is why we’re humbly asking for any and all donations to make this dream a reality. With our first Discord being offered as the centerpiece of this fundraiser, and given away to one lucky person.

And that’s not the only thing. Since we’ll be running this event for about two weeks, during that time, I am going to take you through a detailed, picture-filled account of every single step that goes into making a 3D-printed figure. From modeling to printing to painting. So you have that to look forward to.

It is a beautiful model I must say. Very well translated into 3D. IF you allow me some constructive feedback, I would suggest to make the wings convex instead of flat, that would add a little extra OMMMPH to the model.

Also, I recommend lowering the specular light ont he dragon wing and making it mate, yet it looks very nice in the tail, with could use a little twinkle in the UV map to add some scales.

Ah yeah, I didn't give him a proper texture map yet (as it is, he just has base colors assigned to different polys via material IDs, and some of them definitely have too much specular.) I do know how to set up a proper UV map, I just haven't had the time with this model. ^^; And I've already rigged the wings, so the final posed model that get printed will definitely have some nice curving going on there. =)

Thanks for your input!

Draegur / mtd.mobius@gmail.com -- Sorry I couldn't spare more! But all in all, I'm thrilled you'd consider making a rig of this model available to our whole community! You totally deserve compensation for the hard work--and your hard-earned gains can only serve to encourage you to make even MORE awesome stuff! :D So good luck!

I see this as I take a dA break from rigging my own 3D Discord and nearly spittake. Admittedly, mine wouldn't be printable and is intentionally not faithful to the show, but still, to see someone else attempt the insanity that is Discord in 3D makes me happy. I wish you the best of luck as you rig this complex little @#$%^&, he's certainly testing my patience. I hope you reach your goal and get to send this John DeLancie. It looks great.

My curiosity begs to ask, are you making a full, animation friendly rig with all the controllers set up and everything or just setting up the skeleton and a few simple controls? I'd imagine the full rig would be overkill for 3D printing but if you're releasing it with the potential for other to play with it in Gmod, then I could see why you might put the extra effort in.

I'm rather inexperienced at rigging, so I use the CAT rig system, which is basically Max's way of letting people rig who do not know how to rig. :P I wish I knew more, because then I wouldn't have to do so many custom edits to each model prior to printing. (The rig gets the job done, it's just jaggy and messy and requires cleanup for the model to be print-worthy.)

In any case, I imagine anyone wanting to use it in gmod would have to redo the rig to meet the exact specifications anyway, so I don't feel too bad.

I understand completely. I've never had much luck using the CAT system for exactly that reason. That, and since my models are meant for use in game engines (not necessarily Gmod), they need to be animate-able and therefore require more animator friendly controls that the CAT system just doesn't like you adding in.

It may cost a bit of money, but I highly recommend digitaltutors.com. Their quadruped and wing rigging tutorials are the only reason I'm going to survive this blasted draconeques. And besides, if you continue doing these awesome looking 3D prints, it'd probably be really helpful to be able to make any custom rig you want. Best of luck!

It's funny that you say that, because digitaltutors tutorials were what taught me the basics of character modeling (my class required it the same way other classes required a certain textbook. That darn scientist tutorial was where I learned everything. xP) Now if only I'd watched the rigging videos before my subscription ran out... x.X

They're good, a bit expensive and boring (as I'm sure you remember), but good. I'm only paying them because of some pony commissions I took. So worth it.

On his lizard foot, he only has 2 toes instead of 3 :). But.. I can overlook that coz the rest looks so amazing :D

Hmm, apparently Lauren drew him with three toes: [link]

However, his show model is obviously modified from that just by being digitigrade, so that's not really proof.

Have there ever been any views of his foot from the front? This is a real question, because I could find no reference. And most cartoon animal feet when drawn from the side are drawn with only two toes visible (because the far toe is smaller and hidden by the larger middle toe.)

Yea, you could be right ^^. I saw this reference, [link] , but as you said, the 3rd toe could be hidden ^^. And I see Lauren has done 3 toes so you could be right :).

Learn something everyday! But I do love this, best Discord model I have seen around :)

I think it's really thoughtful of you to make a second one for John. He'll stick it on his nightstand and do Chaotic things before he goes to sleep.
OR
He'll be so proud that you get sponsored.. somehow... somewhere. For w/e reason that only imagination can answer.

But, I think #1 is more likely.

PS: I'm watching you.

So is the donation for the process of getting more 3-D printers so you can make models more efficiently, or is the donation to help get a model to John DeLancie? Because from the way I am reading it it seems to me like it is to get a model to John DeLancie, but I do not understand why that would need any donations, couldn't you just like e-mail him and tell him about it, and I am sure he would find a way to get it to him. . . Either way I will undoubedtly donate money, that thing is freaking awesome!
